Day hikes are undertaken on Saturdays and take between four to eight hours.
Refer to the hiking list Link for details. Members receive more details of each Saturday’s hikes on a weekly basis, usually on the Monday or Tuesday. These details include the name and description of the hike, starting time, cost involved, contact details of the hike leader, grade level and duration.
To be considered for participation on a day hike, phone or WhatsApp (not sms) the appropriate hike leader during the week but no later than 7pm on the Friday before the hike. Details must include names, surnames and membership status.
For moderate and strenuous hikes, the hiker’s fitness and endurance is taken into consideration by the hike leader before adding them to the hike list.
Correct shoes, equipment and sufficient water are important when undertaking a hike and hike leaders need to turn away unprepared hikers.
As some hikes can only take limited numbers, participation is on a first-come basis.
Children younger than 10 or pets are not permitted on hikes.
The cost of the day hike varies depending on the controlling body of the trail. All trails have a club cost of R10.00. In addition, some trails include entrance and/or permit fees, ranging from being free-of-charge to costs in excess of R80.00. The latter cost is out of the club’s control.
Hikes are graded on a ten-point scale based on five categories: distance, elevation, terrain, cover and duration. For details on hike grading and difficulty ratings click here.
